The Golden Route
Welcome to discover the wonders of the Golden Route.
The Golden Route is the most impressive part of the legendary Great Silk Road, which in ancient
times served as a link, connecting Europe with the East, not only in commercial sence, as means
of transporting silk, but in terms of cultural and scientific exchange as well.
The biggest part of the Golden Route lies in Uzbekistan, an indepentend state in Central Asia.
De Sjah Rah or Kings' Road connected Samarkand and Bukhara and was the most used caravan road in
history. Caravans of up to 3.000 camels covered the distance of 250 km in a week's time.
This country with its fascinating history going back to scythes and parthians, samanids and
timourids, was untill recently difficult to visit. In 1995 UNESCO took a decision to promote
the region due to its great historical and cultural importance.
Travelling the Golden Route in Uzbekistan remains an adventure even today, but also a great
discovery. It is a journey through time, through landscapes of breathtaking beauty to a world
of fairy tales of Thousand and One Night.
